Welcome To Chasing Japan!

From a variety of Japanese pop culture topics, photography blurbs, and tips on how to balance work and life, we hope you find our posts entertaining and useful in some way.

So welcome to the adventure. We’d love for you to join us!

A Walk Thourgh Time at The Japanese American National Museum

During my recent vacation in San Diego and Los Angeles, I spent my time documenting Japanese culture like the 12th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival.  It was eye-opening to end it all on a free evening visit to the Japanese American National Museum. Now to start things off, I am no historian, nor do I intend to …

OSUSUSME – Japanese Digital Artist, Maya

Lately, I’ve been pretty obsessed with Instagram. It’s a great place to log my progress as a photographer and connect with others just like me who are trying to make some noise in a crowded digital world. I’ve managed to settle into a few really neat photography and art communities where I’ve discovered countless talented …

12th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival – San Diego Japanese Friendship Garden

Whenever I hear the words ‘cherry blossom’ (or sakura), I automatically think of Japan. Now is the particular time of the year when people all over Japan gather under the cherry trees to watch the delightful flowers bloom. This is certainly not something you see every day (the blooming season lasts about a month), …

About Us

Your interests don’t define you, they enhance you.

In today’s world – where everyone on the web claims to be an expert, where there seem to be a lot more coaches than players – we want Chasing Japan to stand out. We don’t claim to be experts at X or masters of Y. Instead, we’re true players – sharing our trials, tribulations, failures, and successes for everyone to see. In return, we hope to not only share our love of Japan with everyone, but offer inspiration to anyone that needs it. We’re all in this together!

It all started in the Fall of 2013 when we (Nick & Louis) met at military tech school. A simple introduction quickly turned to the topic of anime, and the rest is history!

…Well, not really. Anime lead to a broader range of Japanese topics like food, culture, and the language. From there, we realized that we both had a passion for Japan and wanted to fuel its fire. So we did what every self proclaimed otaku would do – we decided to start our own business in Japan after our military contracts were over ^^

Since then, our love for Japan has only grown. But we’ve also found a new passion in photography. Photowalks and friendly photo challenges have become a normal part of our friendship, and we’ve noticed that we spend about as much time talking about cameras as we do about anime! Seeing things from different viewpoints and thinking about things in another language have helped us develop a unique perspective that we want to share with everyone.

Even though we’re still serving out the remainder of our military contracts, we know we can’t sit around and wait. Starting a business is hard, but starting a business in Japan is even harder. Finding time to complete our missions, develop our business, practice photography, spend time with family, and enjoy some anime & manga may seem like a daunting task, but we manage to do just that every day. In today’s fast-paced society, time is our most valuable asset. And anything that helps save an hour or 2 every day is worth doing.

Sure there will be challenges. Business ideas may fail. Our plans may get delayed. Relationships will be made and broken. The stigma that follows when you admit to liking something society views as “geeky” is as alive as ever. But we believe our long term goals are too important to let societal norms get in the way!
